The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife experiences, attracting travellers from around the world to the vast plains of Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Every year, millions of wildebeest, together with large numbers of zebras and gazelles, move across the ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water.

When Is the Best Time to See the Great Migration?
There is no single month that represents the entire migration. The herds move throughout the year, creating different wildlife experiences in different areas.
January to March – Calving Season
During the beginning of the year, large herds gather in the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. This is an exceptional time to witness the calving season, when thousands of wildebeest calves are born.
The abundance of young animals also attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.
April to June – The Journey North
As the rains transform the plains into lush grasslands, the herds begin moving northwards. This period can offer beautiful landscapes, fewer crowds, and rewarding game-viewing experiences.
July to October – Northern Serengeti & River Crossings
The migration eventually reaches the Northern Serengeti, where one of its most dramatic spectacles can occur: the famous Mara River crossings.
Watching herds gather along the river before making their way across is an unforgettable safari experience. However, the exact timing and location of crossings are determined by nature and cannot be guaranteed.
This is also one of the most popular periods for visiting the Serengeti, so planning ahead is highly recommended.
November to December – Return to the South
With the arrival of the short rains, the herds begin their journey back towards the Southern Serengeti. The cycle continues as the animals follow the availability of fresh grazing.
