Southern Serengeti – Calving Season
From approximately January to March, large herds gather across the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area for the calving season. Thousands of wildebeest calves are born during this period, attracting predators and creating exceptional wildlife encounters.
This is an ideal time for travellers interested in newborn wildlife, predator activity, and dramatic scenes across the open plains.
Central Serengeti – Following the Herds
The Central Serengeti, particularly around the Seronera area, offers excellent wildlife viewing throughout much of the year. As the migration moves through the ecosystem, travellers can combine sightings of migrating herds with opportunities to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and other wildlife.
Its central location also makes it an excellent base for exploring different parts of the Serengeti.
Western Serengeti – The Grumeti Region
Around May and June, parts of the migration can move towards the Western Corridor and the Grumeti River. The landscape becomes greener after the rains, creating beautiful conditions for game drives.
The area is also known for its diverse wildlife and the possibility of seeing herds gathering around river areas.
Northern Serengeti – Mara River Crossings
From around July to October, the herds move towards the Northern Serengeti, where the famous Mara River crossings may take place.
This is one of the most anticipated moments of the migration. However, river crossings are completely controlled by nature, and their exact timing and location cannot be predicted.
Northern Serengeti is therefore an excellent destination for travellers hoping to experience this dramatic stage of the migration.
